I’ve been looking into what different colours means to different cultures and so far I have found a site where it lists all the colours and how people from different places perceive them. However I have not found how they have come to their findings. Ok so the past two weeks have not been the most productive weeks! On top of dragging my feet, “life got in the way” but things have improved and after completing my learning contract and starting my dissertation contents page my motivation appears to have come back and I can now focus clearly! This weekend I intend to have the house modelled and i’ll post pictures of the progress :D Only 6 weeks left to complete the animation and a further week to get the dissertation done but as I always say I work better under pressure!

More Inspiration! I was in a gallery where I live and came across an artist whose work I love, Tracy Savage. I love her imaginative, quirky “Tim Burton” style and will definitely be taking inspiration from her work and purchasing a canvas in the future!

While my project is based on mood I have never defined what I MEAN by mood. What I am trying to do is create an animation with strong senses of emotion both in the environment and with the viewer. The moods I wish to create in the animation are happiness, sadness etc. The story of the animation is about a house that has just been built and then as the years go by the house decays due to lack of attention by the owner and the animation ends up sad and falling apart.

Seeing as how my animation has changed, I have also had to rethink the design of the house and so I am taking inspiration from this one as I feel that I can do a lot to it through out the moods.

Colour Research

I have been researching colour and mood today and so far I have found that:

Colour does have an influence on people

“the psychology of color for interior design could change the productivity of their workers.” - http://www.xzcution.com/make-your-interior-design-with-different-colors/

Psychology of interior design is also dependent on the person’s knowledge of the colour’s historical use. For example, dark greens were traditionally used for banking, dark purple is historically equated to kings and royalty.

Red - increases blood pressure and appetite
Terra Cotta - evokes muted feelings of desire
Blue, Brown and Green (earth tones) - offer a feeling of tranquility, browns can offer a feeling of security while greens offer neutrality
Light purple - has a calming effect
Grey - works well for productivity (used in many offices)
Black - hints at being submissive
Yellow - Can either evoke happiness or anger. This colour is like marmite, you either love it or you hate it. People who like yellow like it immensely and those who dislike it, dislike it completely.

Here are some of the drawings I made before deciding on the house design in the final image. I felt that to begin with I was not coming up with houses that were “cartoony” enough however I am happy with the end result and I have started building the house now.

I was driving on the A9 road on Sunday night from Inverness and I wish I had stopped to take pictures of these sights. The first is a church at Daviot, the second is Ruthvern Barracks and the third is a rock face further down the road. I had a look online and these are the best photo’s I could find. When it is night time the lights make these places look scary. I think it is because of the stark contrast between light and dark. The church at Daviot looks especially scary but I think that is because it is surrounded by a grave yard.

I wanted to set the scene first of all before showing the audience the bedroom so the animtion is going to begin with a scene of a house at night and there is a light going on and off again from the top window. The scene then changes to the upstairs hall in the house and at the end of the hall is a door where light is bleeding through the cracks. The camera zooms in through the door to reveal a young girl lying in her bed holding onto the switch for her night light. The room is filled with bright colours and happiness but then she turns off the light and the reason for why she can’t go to sleep is revealed because the room changes to darkness and scaryness.

While reading through the Art of Toy Story 3 I came across this great picture. It is the exact same image but the mood has been changed from happy to scary when the time went from day to night. As far as I can see all that was used was lighting and different tones in order to convey this.

Aims and Objectives For My Project...

Aim

To determine how to effect a change in mood in 3D animation.

Objectives

Research traditional techniques for creating mood. To achieve this information we will watch films that show a change in mood and understand what techniques they used in order to convey this. We will also read books and web pages that talk about techniques used in the film industry.

Design the visual style for the animation, to design a character to act in the short and to create a storyboard to finalise how the animation is going to run. This will involve more research into characters and environments that are the same planned for the animation.

Implement my designs to create the 3D environment and character. From there we can animation the short and render it out. This will be done by using computer software called Maya.

Evaluate my animation and discuss whether the techniques we found to be mostsuccessful from research were in fact the best ones to use.

The design for the character will not have much time spent on it as the character is not the main focus in the project. They will be there to just simply drive the story.

I am still waiting on The Art of Finding Nemo and The Art of Toy Story 3 to arrive through the door and hopefully when they do I will be able to learn about what techniques they used to convey a change in mood. I am very excited to get my hands on these books!

I am told that the Toy Story 3 book has a very good part about how they changed the mood in the nursery from happy to scary when the toys “find themselves in daycare where untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice.”
